It’s no secret that the cost of getting further education has increased a lot in recent years, so it is no surprise that many students question whether they can afford it. But the intangible value of a college education have long been in doubt and debated widely. Now studies are showing a remarkable list of quality of life benefits that accrue to college graduates versus their high school only counterparts.

Dayton school board holds off on physical education request

December 18, 2009 |10:31 | Physical Education  By : Team X

The Dayton Board of Education likely won’t act anytime soon on a request by a group of parents to waive the high school physical education requirement for certain student athletes and others.

That’s because pending legislation at the Statehouse in Columbus threatens to eliminate a provision in recent state law that allows school districts to waive the requirement, and the board doesn’t want to act too soon, board member Sheila Taylor said Wednesday, Dec. 16.

“We really didn’t want to start a process, put it in a place and use the time of staff because there’s so much going on in the district,” Taylor said. “Not that it’s not an important issue, (but) we’re just going to kind of wait and see what happens with the legislation.

Is Online University Education Opening Pandora's Box?

December 5, 2009 |09:44 | Online Education  By : Team X

Are some of us missing something here? I mean, how is it that universities justify virtually the same tuition rates for online students as they do for their regular, in resident, 'brick and mortar' students? Usually pricing reflects the cost of the product or service. When a competitive system comes along that costs a lot less to produce the same product or service the prices come down or strong competition inevitably ensues. This is true even when an entire well organized and heavily financed establishment is reluctant to make changes.

Many university students, their families, and even employers have asked similar questions. The decibel level of these questions, however, has not reached an appreciable level yet. One thing is for sure, many consumers are so indoctrinated that they are loathe to question authority for any reason. Perhaps the consumers of education are too busy worrying about the cost of tuition and whether, or not, they can even afford the cost of a university degree, which can go as high as $100,000 USD.

Elementary Education in Orissa

December 4, 2009 |10:42 | Elementary Education  By : Team X

"For fifty years we have been a developing nation. It is time we see ourselves as a developed nation." This is the part of the speech of Dr Abdul Kalam in Hyderabad. Whenever we are talking about Developed nation, suddenly education comes to picture with other major indicators like the growth rate of the economy, birth rate, death rate, infant mortality rate (IMR), and literacy rate. These indicators are all interconnected with each other and the literacy rate has been the major determinant of the rise or fall in the other indicators. There is enough evidence even in Orissa to show that a low literacy rate correlates with high birth rate, high IMR, and decrease in the rate of life expectancy. The recognition of this fact has created awareness on the need to focus upon literacy and elementary education programmes, not simply as a matter of social justice but more to foster economic growth, social well-being, and social stability.
