Physical Education First, Rugby Second Are Bell's RulesPhysical Education First, Rugby Second Are Bell's Rules: Andre Bell is something of an accidental rugby coach. Thirteen years ago he faced a tough decision as he clutched an NPC contract in one hand and a job offer to teach at Rotorua Boys' High School in the other. At 25, the Otago fullback's rugby career was far from over and another year in front of the packed Dunedin terraces beckoned.

But it wasn't why he'd headed south to university. It wasn't why his parents had jumped at a scholarship for him to board at Lindisfarne College in Napier. And it wasn't why he had just completed a degree in physical education. "I actually rang the principal of Rotorua Boys and said, `Can I come after the NPC finishes?' He said, `No'.

"He said he would accept my decision if I chose rugby, but he would be pretty disappointed.

"I told the Otago coach Glen Ross, `I'm going to Rotorua to pursue my career', and he said, `Good on ya' and shook my hand.

December 18, 2009 |10:31 | Physical Education  By : Team X

The Dayton Board of Education likely won’t act anytime soon on a request by a group of parents to waive the high school physical education requirement for certain student athletes and others.

That’s because pending legislation at the Statehouse in Columbus threatens to eliminate a provision in recent state law that allows school districts to waive the requirement, and the board doesn’t want to act too soon, board member Sheila Taylor said Wednesday, Dec. 16.

“We really didn’t want to start a process, put it in a place and use the time of staff because there’s so much going on in the district,” Taylor said. “Not that it’s not an important issue, (but) we’re just going to kind of wait and see what happens with the legislation.
