I anticipate that the title of this article will probably upset a few people, but please bear with me and continue reading. I am certainly a strong proponent of learning and education, as I myself am a college graduate in Chemical Engineering. However, the chief arguments I would like to present are that education does not have to be formal to be effective, and that the main purpose of a formal education is to get a better job.

Basically, a college education is an investment in your future. Just as in evaluating the merits of any investment, you need to perform a cost-benefit analysis, with the cost being the tuition and fees, and the benefits being the increase in pay you could expect due to attaining your degree. The higher the costs, the larger the benefits need to be for the investment to make sense.

College Principal supports education reforms

The Principal of Hobart's Elizabeth College has accused the education union of denying students new learning opportunities by campaigning against the post year ten education system. Graeme Young was among 25 people who attended a union meeting in Hobart tonight to explain why there's opposition to the college making the transition to the Tasmania Tomorrow system next year.

The union disputes claims by the Premier, David Bartlett, that more than 70 per cent of teachers support the move. Mr Young says students will benefit when the college becomes an Academy and Polytechnic. "So that the opportunities provided by the new organisation such as new programs are available both in the Academy and the Polytechnic can be available there for students and this is being denied," he said.
