Is a College Education Always Worth It?

I anticipate that the title of this article will probably upset a few people, but please bear with me and continue reading. I am certainly a strong proponent of learning and education, as I myself am a college graduate in Chemical Engineering. However, the chief arguments I would like to present are that education does not have to be formal to be effective, and that the main purpose of a formal education is to get a better job.

Basically, a college education is an investment in your future. Just as in evaluating the merits of any investment, you need to perform a cost-benefit analysis, with the cost being the tuition and fees, and the benefits being the increase in pay you could expect due to attaining your degree. The higher the costs, the larger the benefits need to be for the investment to make sense.

Online college education refers to courses where at least 80 percent of content is distributed online. There is often no face-to-face contact involved with these degree programs. The students can work in their study time on a schedule that best fits their own schedule.

Recent advances in online education has made college degrees obtained through online study as readily accepted as college degrees earned by on campus study. On average, online courses are far more writing intensive than traditional classes have ever been. Online education also involves access to databases in the form of text files or multimedia web pages, as well as the exchange of information (e.g., assignments, course materials) via file transfers. Online education is rapidly increasing, and online doctoral programs have even developed at leading research universities.

The Advantages of Online Education

In today's busy lifestyle, most people have no time to go back to school even they have intention to get more degrees for career advancement, job promotion or simply to learning something new. Thirteen years ago he faced a tough decision as he clutched an NPC contract in one hand and a job offer to teach at Rotorua Boys' High School in the other. At 25, the Otago fullback's rugby career was far from over and another year in front of the packed Dunedin terraces beckoned.

But it wasn't why he'd headed south to university. It wasn't why his parents had jumped at a scholarship for him to board at Lindisfarne College in Napier. And it wasn't why he had just completed a degree in physical education. "I actually rang the principal of Rotorua Boys and said, `Can I come after the NPC finishes?' He said, `No'.

"He said he would accept my decision if I chose rugby, but he would be pretty disappointed.

"I told the Otago coach Glen Ross, `I'm going to Rotorua to pursue my career', and he said, `Good on ya' and shook my hand.

Education board gets annual AYP report

A bold prediction of success was the silver lining to the Thursday night's "annual punishment" for the members of Farmington Municipal School District's Board of Education. Robert Emerson, the assistant superintendent of technology, gave the board a presentation on how Farmington schools did when testing for Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP. The results were made public in New Mexico last week.

Emerson referred to it as punishment because no school in the district made AYP.But he also talked about progress made throughout the district and said by giving students incentives for AYP tests, Farmington high schools will improve the percentage of proficient students by 15 to 20 percent next year.

AYP for schools is achieved by a week-long test for a federally determined percentage of "proficient" children. The percentage increases every year and if a school fails to make that percentage in one of around 37 subgroups, the whole school fails.

Education City faces bleak future

The UT's only mega project that took off, Education City, is also facing a bleak future, though its reasons for that are quite different from those of other similar projects. In this case, the stringent conditions finalized by administration have kept most major institutes away.

UT adviser Pradip Mehra had convened a meeting about this on Monday, but the final decision is yet to be taken on scrapping the project. Sources in administration, however, confirmed that it was only a matter of time before UT came out with a formal announcement for that as the project had failed to generate response expected from private educational institutes.

Most applicants shortlisted by the education department for allocation of sites in Education City have backed out and only three have so far signed agreements with UT. The applicants, which were allotted land for the first and second phase of the project, had pointed out to the administration that All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) norms required that either the company should own the land on which educational set up was proposed or have the area's lease for 99 years.

Chinese International School (Singapore), after more than three years of exploration, innovation, construction and harvesting, has gained achievements and success. This shows that China's education, not only can go to the world, but also can contribute to upgrading of China's soft power, a school principal has said.

The school was established by Beijing Huijia Educational Institutions in September 2006. Based on international Baccalaureate (IB) standards, the school is characterized by the Chinese culture and integration of Eastern and Western culture.
