Part of Gov. John Kasich's State of the State speech involved higher education and the need for improvement there, as well as in public schools. While some community and technical colleges have excellent career training programs, others need to improve, Kasich suggested.
Part of the burden lies on business people who often complain schools are not providing the training needed in new employees, the governor said. The business community needs to provide better guidance in that regard, he said. Noting just 14 percent of students who enroll in so-called four-year colleges and universities actually obtain degrees in four years, he drew nods of approval from many in the audience by admonishing, "That's just wrong." In essence, Kasich was urging those in higher education to be more proactive in meeting the needs of Ohioans. Let's hope colleges and universities heed the governor's recommendations.
