The Principal of Hobart's Elizabeth College has accused the education union of denying students new learning opportunities by campaigning against the post year ten education system. Graeme Young was among 25 people who attended a union meeting in Hobart tonight to explain why there's opposition to the college making the transition to the Tasmania Tomorrow system next year.
The union disputes claims by the Premier, David Bartlett, that more than 70 per cent of teachers support the move. Mr Young says students will benefit when the college becomes an Academy and Polytechnic. "So that the opportunities provided by the new organisation such as new programs are available both in the Academy and the Polytechnic can be available there for students and this is being denied," he said.
"It's being said there is no educational advantage to students in the new system and that is not true. The union's holding stop-work meetings at state schools this week. Members are being asked to vote on three motions, including a no confidence vote on the Premier's handling of Elizabeth College's transition to Tasmania Tomorrow.
